Shafiul Alam alias Leda Putu was an associate of Shaheen, the leader of the smuggling and robbery group Shaheen Gang, and was accused in more than 12 cases.
Unidentified assailants gunned down a man, who police said was a listed robber and murder accused, in Garjoniya Union under Ramu Upazila of Cox's Bazar early today (24 January).
The incident took place around 2:15am in the Majhikata area of the union's Ward No 6, confirmed Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan.
The police official identified the deceased as Shafiul Alam alias Leda Putu, 28, saying he was an associate of Shaheen, the leader of the Shaheen gang, an active smuggling and robbery group operating in the Naikhongchhari border area.
Shafiul was a listed robber and accused in more than 12 cases, including several charges of robbery and murder, filed at Ramu Police Station, said the OC.
Shafiul's wife Yamin Akter claimed Shafiul was eating at home late at night when three acquaintances called him outside, said OC Monirul. Soon after, the assailants shot him several times in the head and fled.
Moments later, Yamin said she heard several gunshots and found her husband lying injured in front of the house. Police later recovered his body and sent it to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said the OC.
He said police suspect that the killing was the result of internal conflict among the members of the robbery gang, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact motive.
