Key suspect arrested in abduction of 6-year-old Bayzid
Earlier, police arrested a neighbour of the child named Kulsum in connection with the incident, SRB-4 Media Officer Nurangir Nahid confirmed today (8 October).
Special Response Battalion (SRB) has arrested Tahura Banu Lipi, 45, identified as the alleged key figure in the abduction of six-year-old Bayzid from Dhaka's Rupnagar.
Earlier, police arrested a neighbour of the child named Kulsum in connection with the incident, SRB-4 Media Officer Nurangir Nahid confirmed today (8 October).
Nahid said that Lipi was arrested at a house in the Kha-para area under Tongi West police station on Tuesday night (6 October) by SRB-4 and SRB-1.
"She has been handed over to the relevant police station for legal action, while efforts are continuing to arrest other members of the alleged ring," he added.
Earlier, six-year-old Bayzid was abducted from his home in the Duaripara area under Rupnagar police station in the capital on 18 September. After being missing for 18 days, he was rescued on Tuesday (6 October) from a child rehabilitation centre in Tongi, Gazipur, by SRB-4.
Investigators said the abductors were unsuccessful in selling the child at several locations before abandoning him on the roadside. Local police later took him to the rehabilitation centre.
Nahid said Bayzid had been reunited with his family.
According to SRB, the child's father, Rafiqul Islam, works as a rickshaw puller, while his mother works as a domestic helper in several households.
On the morning of 18 September, Bayzid's mother left home for work while her husband and son were asleep. His father later woke up around midday and found that Bayzid was missing. After searching for him in several places, he filed a case with Rupnagar police station.
During the investigation, SRB found that Nasrin, one of Rafiqul's neighbours, was involved with a child theft ring.
Investigators said Nasrin and Lipi later took Bayzid to Gazipur with the intention of selling him. Kulsum has already been arrested in connection with the case.
Nahid said that the gang allegedly approached several childless couples in an attempt to sell Bayzid, but were unable to do so because of his age.
As the incident attracted widespread attention, the abductors eventually abandoned the child on the roadside and fled, he added.
