Jatrabari killing: Tribunal indicts ex-DMP chief Habibur, 10 others; trial starts 29 March

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered the commencement of trial after formally framing charges against 11 accused in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of Imam Hasan Taim, a police officer's son, shot dead by police in Jatrabari during the July Uprising.
At the same time, it fixed 29 March for the opening statements and recording of witness testimonies.
The order was passed today (22 February) by International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
Advocate Abul Hasan represented the two arrested accused and filed a petition seeking their discharge, along with their acquittal. Additionally, state defence lawyers M Hasan Imam and Lokman Hawlader appeared on behalf of the nine fugitives. They also opposed the prosecution's allegations against their clients, asserting that their clients were not involved in the crime.
The tribunal rejected the petitions and directed that the trial proceed.
On 28 January, the prosecution sought the framing of formal charges against the 11 accused on the basis of prima facie grounds. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam submitted the petition to the tribunal after a hearing that day.
The police produced the two arrested accused before the tribunal from jail this morning. They are former Jatrabari Police Station officer-in-charge Abul Hasan and former sub-inspector Shahadat Ali.
The fugitives are former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman; joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty; former deputy commissioner of Wari Zone Iqbal Hossain; additional deputy commissioner Shakil Mohammad Shamim; former additional deputy commissioner of Demra Zone Md Masudur Rahman Monir; former assistant police commissioner Nahid Ferdous; former investigation inspector of Jatrabari Police Station Zakir Hossain; inspector (Operations) Wahidul Haque Mamun; and sub-inspector (Unarmed) Sajjad Uz Zaman.
On 24 December last year, ICT-2 took cognisance of the charges against the 11 accused and issued arrest warrants. On that day, the prosecution formally submitted the charges.

When his friend Rahat attempted to rescue him, the police also opened fire on him.
The prosecution brought charges of crimes against humanity against the accused, including giving orders to kill, incitement and instigation.
Taim's father, Md Moinul Hossain Bhuiyan, is also a police officer and is currently serving as a sub-inspector at Rajarbagh Police Lines.
