Drug dealer arrested in Rajshahi with heroin worth Tk6cr, largest seizure in DNC history

Joint forces have arrested a drug dealer from Rajshahi's Godagari with 6.5 kilograms of heroin worth Tk6 crore, which is the largest amount to be seized in the history of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC).
Tarek Hossain was arrested on Tuesday (22 April) at around 10am after a team of the Rajshahi Divisional Intelligence Office of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) and the Army conducted a raid in the Tirinda Bhajanpur area of the upazila, DNC's Additional Director General Golam Azam said at a press briefing.
"He owns a farm and market, from where the 6.5 kg of heroin and the money were recovered. This is the largest heroin seizure in the history of the department. The arrested individual is considered a godfather in heroin trafficking," he added.
During the raid, which was conducted based on a tip-off, the security forces seized Tk13 lakh in cash, a mobile phone, and an electric sealing machine.
At the press conference, DNC official Golam said the suspect confessed to his involvement in drug-related activities.
"Legal proceedings against him are underway, and other key members of the network are under surveillance."
Also at the conference, DNC Director (Administration) Masud Hossain stated that opium is now banned in Afghanistan and the production has entirely shifted to Myanmar.
"Since Bangladesh shares a border with Myanmar, it's become easier for drugs to enter the country. However, the DNC is not sitting idle; more arrests are being made, and the offenders are being brought under the law."
Zillur Rahman, deputy director of the DNC's Rajshahi Divisional Intelligence Office, said Tarek had been under their surveillance.
"Due to their joint efforts, he was apprehended. An investigating officer has been assigned, and the case will be investigated. The estimated value of the seized heroin is around Tk6.5 crore."
Senior officials of the agency were present at the press conference.
