The Chattogram Customs House Friday seized cigarettes worth around Tk22 lakh at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram.     

Acting on a tip-off, customs intelligence officials seized around 1,112 cartons of "Esse" cigarettes from three passengers of two flights.

The customs officials recovered 174 cartons cigarettes from Hafej Mohammad Hasan of Fatikchhari upazila, who reached Chattogram from Dubai by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines around 8:30pm.

Eight hundred and two more cartons of cigarette were seized from a passenger of Air Arabia flight while rest 136 cartons were seized from another passenger of the same flight around 9pm.  

They left the cigarettes abandoned at the arrival belt of the airport and fled. The customs officials later recovered them.  

The cigarette cartons were taken to customs custody, said Customs Deputy Commissioner Riyadul Islam.

"Measures are being taken as per the customs law in connection with the incident," he added.
