Bystanders watch as Ctg auto-rickshaw driver beaten to death in public
One suspect has been arrested after being identified through CCTV footage analysis
A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver was beaten to death in public on a street in Chattogram last night (21 January), with many bystanders reportedly watching the assault without intervening.
Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the killing of the man identified as Khorshed Alam, 51.
The attack took place around 11pm in the Midapara area near Amin Jute Mill under Bayezid Bostami Police Station.
According to police, the arrested suspect, Md Shamshul Alam, 36, was identified through CCTV camera footage analysis.
A case has been filed against prime accused Mohammad Hossain, 43, and two to three unidentified individuals.
Bayezid Bostami Police Station Operations Officer Sub-Inspector Ashraful Alam said multiple injuries were found on Khorshed's head and face.
"After reviewing the footage, Shamshul was identified as one of the attackers and has been arrested," he said.
The video circulating on social media shows three men arguing with Khorshed on the street before pushing and repeatedly hitting him with sticks. Even after Khorshed fell unconscious, the attackers continued the assault before fleeing the scene.
Despite the presence of numerous bystanders, no one intervened to help him.
Bayezid Bostami police's Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Kabir said initial investigations indicate the attack began over a minor argument, reportedly related to bad blood, and escalated fatally.
"No previous enmity or dispute has been found between the accused and the deceased," he added.
Police said legal proceedings are ongoing, and other suspects are yet to be apprehended.
