An auto-rickshaw driver in Mymensingh's Muktagachha has died from injuries sustained in a mob beating allegedly led by a local leader of Chhatra Dal.
The victim, Md Fahim, 30, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Tuesday (12 August), police said.
Following the incident, Muktagachha Upazila's Mankon union unit Chhatra Dal president Md Sajib Hasan and two activists, Abir and Maruf, were expelled from the organisation, according to a report by Prothom Alo.
In a letter signed by Muktagachha upazila Chhatra Dal convener Md Monjurul Haque (Arif) and member secretary Asad Farazi, it was stated that, "As per the directive of the district Chhatra Dal president and general secretary, the three have been expelled from the party's primary membership for proven involvement in activities that violated party discipline and contravened the law and order situation."
According to locals and police, the incident stemmed from a dispute over Tk350 that grocery shop owner Rasel from Algir Char village claimed from the victim's cousin Yasin. An argument broke out between Rasel and Yasin's family over the unpaid amount.
On Monday afternoon (11 August), reportedly siding with Rasel, Mankon union Chhatra Dal president Sajib led a group to Mankon Board Ghar Mor.
Mojnu Mia, his son Yasin, and his nephew Fahim were called out of their home, after which Sajib and his associates allegedly beat them indiscriminately.
Eyewitness Mobarak Hossain said, "Union Chhatra Dal president Sajib and his men brutally assaulted Fahim with wooden planks from a local sawmill, leaving him critically injured. When we tried to intervene, they drove us away."
Fahim and the others were rescued and taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where Fahim died the following day while undergoing treatment.
On Tuesday night, Fahim's mother, Ruby Akter, filed a murder case with Muktagachha Police Station, naming Sajib as the prime accused along with 11 others.
Muktagachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ripon Chandra Gope said, "A drive is underway to arrest those involved in the killing."
