Police in Chattogram's Patenga area on Friday night (4 April) arrested five suspected smugglers and seized over one kg of gold, foreign cigarettes, and several electronic items from their possession.

The operation took place at the Airport Intersection area under the jurisdiction of Patenga Police Station at around 11:30pm, according to police.

Patenga police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam said acting on a tip-off, police had set up a temporary checkpoint and intercepted a suspicious vehicle. After searching the vehicle, they recovered 1.155 kg of gold, five mobile phones, two laptops, and 13 cartons of foreign cigarettes.

He identified the five arrestees as Md Toufiqul Rahman Sohag, 37, Md Akidul Alam Shanto, 22, Md Hasan Murad, 24, Md Naimul Haque, 20, and Monir Ahmed, 48.

OC Shafiqul said, "The seizure was made based on confidential information regarding illegal goods being transported through the area. Four suspects were detained at the scene.

"Following initial interrogations, police arrested a fifth suspect, Monir, from the nearby Ghat No 15 area."

According to police estimates, the total value of the seized items amounts to approximately Tk 1.6 crore. Legal action has been taken, and all five suspects have been formally charged and presented before the court.

Further investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the smuggling network and whether additional individuals are involved, said police.
