4 top members of two juvenile gangs in Cumilla arrested
Police say more than 2,000 teenagers have been detained for questioning during a 10-day special operation across the district.
The Cumilla District Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested four alleged top members of two juvenile gangs, "Raw" and "Crime Setup", during raids over the past 24 hours.
The arrests were made at different locations in Cumilla and Cox's Bazar, police said.
The arrested suspects are "Raw" gang ringleader Imran Hossain Ratan, 19, and Saiful Islam, 20, and "Crime Setup" gang members Sabbir, better known as Point Sabbir, 24, and Robiul Islam Nabi, better known as King Maker, 24.
According to police, Ratan has nine cases against him, including those related to murder, snatching and drugs, while Saiful has 10 cases against him over various offences. Sabbir and Nabi each have one case against them.
District police said a special 10-day operation has been underway across Cumilla to curb juvenile gangs, drug-related offences, extortion, snatching and territorial dominance.
During the operation, more than 2,000 teenagers were detained for questioning on suspicion, police said. After verification, legal action was taken against those found to be involved in criminal activities, while those with no involvement were handed over to their guardians.
Police said many members of juvenile gangs have gone into hiding amid the ongoing operations, but efforts to arrest them are continuing.
Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfur Rahman said such operations would continue to curb the activities of juvenile gangs and related crimes in the district.
He also urged parents to remain vigilant about whom their children associate with and where they go.
