Four death row convicts were arrested this morning (26 June) shortly after they had escaped from the Bogura Central Jail late last night.

The arrestees are Nazrul Islam, 68, Md Amir Hamza, 41, Md Zakaria, 34, and Md Farid Sheikh, 30.

According to the police, they escaped from the jail's condemned cell at around 3am. Police nabbed them shortly after they fled.

In a press conference this afternoon, District Superintendent of Police (SP) Sudip Kumar Chakraborty said, "Around 3am last night, the four capital punishment awardees made a hole on the roof of the jail's condemned cell and escaped by climbing over the wall with the help of their bed sheets.

"Later, at 3:55am, several police teams started searching the area once they found out about the incident. At 4:10am, they were arrested from Bogura's Chashi Bazar area."

He said, "Immediately after the escape, they were identified using photos sent from the district jail. After their arrest, they were brought to the office of the Detective Branch of Police and the prison authorities identified them [in person]."

Here's how they must have made the prison break

After inspecting the cell, said the SP, it was found that all four of them had been placed in the same cell.

"They [must have] came up with a plan to make a hole in the roof. [It looked like] They made a rope by tying their clothes and bed sheets together. [Assuming that after] Climbing up, they jumped over the wall and escaped across the Karatoya river."

Investigation

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Saiful Islam said a six member probe-committee has been formed to investigate the matter. Further action will be taken once they submit the probe report.

This morning, shortly after the officials, including the deputy commissioner, district superintendent of police, visited the spot. Later, the district administration formed an inquiry committee.

DC Saiful Islam said, "The jail in Bogura is very old. It was built during the British period. Inspecting the site, it was found that many parts of the building are fragile. The four accused were brought here on 1 June this year. They were kept in the same cell. After they arrived I also visited them.

"During the inspection today, we found that there were no rods in the roof where they made a hole…We have discussed renovating these spots. Apart from this, a security post will be set up near the spot where they escaped from."
