340 sacks of government urea fertiliser seized 'while being smuggled' from Ctg to Myanmar

The Naval Police have seized 340 sacks of government urea fertiliser which were reportedly being smuggled from Chattogram to Myanmar. 

The fertiliser was confiscated on Friday from a fishing trawler and later brought to the Kumira Naval Police Outpost in Sitakunda, Chattogram.

Despite the seizure, no arrests were made at the time of the operation, said Wali Uddin Akbar, officer-in-charge of the Kumira Naval Police Outpost. 

"All personnel and workers fled the scene upon the arrival of police. Authorities have identified the trawler owner and those involved, and legal action is underway," he added.

According to the Naval Police, a case under the Special Powers Act was filed on Friday night at the Pahartali Police Station in Chattogram city. 

The case names the trawler's owner and driver as accused, and was filed by Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahman of the Kumira Naval Police Outpost.

Officials reported that the operation was carried out following intelligence that a group was attempting to smuggle the government-owned fertiliser to Myanmar from the Rasmonighat trawler terminal under Pahartali Police Station.

The urea fertiliser bags were stored in two chambers on the seized trawler named FB Abdur Rahman-1's deck. Each sack, marked "KAFCO Granular Urea, Made in Bangladesh," weighed 50 kilograms. Workers manually unloaded the sacks and stored them in a ground-floor room of the Kumira Police Outpost.

OC Wali Uddin said due to the intense heat, the fertiliser was deteriorating in storage, prompting them to inform the court. Further action will be taken based on court directives.
