Two security personnel were stabbed to death while attempting to prevent a theft at the SS Power Plant in the Gandamara area of Chattogram's Banshkhali upazila in the early hours of today (2 September).

The victims are Sarwar Alam, 51, and Rashed Jawardar, 22. Both were retired army warrant officers.

The security personnel were on duty when the attack occurred around 3am.

Sarwar Alam hailed from Talma village in Faridpur's Nagarkanda upazila, while Rashed Jawardar was from Jawardar village in Rajbari's Pangsha upazila.

Sarwar Alam was the head of security at the coal-based power plant.

"When two young men attempted to steal from the power plant, the security personnel confronted the suspects, leading to a violent altercation in which both guards were stabbed," said Tofail Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Banskhali police station.

"The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault. The severely injured security personnel were rushed to Banshkhali Upazila Health Complex. The on-duty doctor declared both of them dead on arrival," he added.

The OC said additional members of police have been deployed to the area in response to the killings, and legal proceedings are underway to apprehend the culprits.

The 1320-megawatt SS Power Plant in Chattogram's Banshkhali successfully started commercial power generation on 18 September 2023.

Bangladesh's S Alam Group has a 70% stake in the power plant, while SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation and HTG Development Group have a 30% stake.

The SS Power Plant is the nation's first private coal-based thermal electricity project to receive an investment of as much as $2.6 billion (Tk28,000 crore) from a single private entity.

Since the commencement of the construction work of the power plant in 2016, 12 workers and local residents have been killed in three incidents.

The casualties happened when law enforcers opened fire on protesters rallying against the project, and workers clashed with their Chinese managers.
