Regent Group Chairman Shahed put on 38-day fresh remand

Two courts in Dhaka and Shatkhira have placed Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed alias Shahed Karim on a 38-day remand in five cases.

The court in Dhaka granted 28 days of remands (seven days in each of four cases) after police produced him before the court after the completion of a 10-day remand on Sunday, Assistant Public Prosecutor Hemayet Uddin Khan told the media.

Meanwhile, Lt Col Ashik Billah, director of legal and media wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), told The Business Standard that a Shatkhira court has granted a 10-day remand in a firearms case filed by the Rab against Shahed.

During the remand hearing, Shahed also admitted that he and Regent Group Managing Director Masud Parvez were criminals. "Sir, I have committed crimes. I will return the money to everyone once my businesses restart," he told the court.

Claiming that his physical condition was not well he said, "We have been facing remand for past 10 days. Now I am ill. If the hearing of the remand is after the Eid, it will be better for me," he said in the court.

The court in Dhaka also placed Masud Parvez on a 21-day remand.

During the hearing on Sunday, Shahed's lawyer asked the court for his bail. On the other hand, Abdullah Abu, Dhaka Metropolitan public prosecutor opposed the bail plea saying that fraudster Shahed played with the lives of the people.

Earlier on July 16, a Dhaka court placed Shahed Karim and Masud Parvez on a 10-day remand each over allegations of faking Covid-19 certificates and embezzling money.

On July 15, a team of the Rab arrested Shahed from Debhata upazila in Satkhira. After his arrest, at least 20 cases have been filed against him with different police stations in Dhaka. Most of these cases have been filed in connection with his fraudulent activities.
