The High Court on Monday issued a ruling asking the authorities concerned to explain why  an order should not be given to release the 83 workers who returned home from Vietnam and Qatar last month and are now detained in jail.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam issued the ruling, following a public interest litigation.

Home Secretary and authorities concerned have been asked to respond to the ruling within two weeks. Writ petitioner Advocate Salah Uddin Reagan, himself, and advocate Md Iqbal Hossain participated in the hearing.

Earlier on September 1, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder ordered the jailing of 83 arrested workers after hearing the appeal of the investigating officer, followed by the completion of their official quarantine period at Uttara's Diabari area.

According to Turag Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nurul Mustakim, these workers were deported on August 16 on charges of criminal activities while staying abroad.

"Based on evidence, they were arrested under section 54 as they tried to return home from the quarantine centre," he added.

On September 13, lawyer Salah Uddin Reagan filed a writ petition at the High Court seeking the release of 81 workers who returned from Vietnam and 2 from Qatar.
