A Dhaka court has set 25 February to deliver its verdict in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against former Dhaka South Jubo League president Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat over allegations of acquiring illegal wealth.
The date was fixed today (9 February) by Judge Md Zakaria Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6.
Fakir Zahidul Islam, a senior bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed the matter. He said the case was scheduled today (9 February) for the accused's self-defence hearing and presentation of arguments. However, the hearing did not take place as the accused remains absconding.
ACC prosecutor Nur-e-Alam presented arguments on behalf of the commission, while no arguments were placed for the defence. After the hearing, the court fixed 25 February for pronouncement of the verdict.
On 2 February, recording of witness testimonies in the case was formally completed. The court examined all 21 witnesses listed in the charge sheet.
According to the case statement, the ACC filed the case on 12 November 2019 through its Deputy Director Md Jahangir Alam, accusing Samrat of acquiring illegal wealth worth Tk 2.94 crore beyond known sources of income. A charge sheet was later submitted on 26 November 2020 by the same ACC official.
On 17 July last year, the same court framed charges against Samrat and ordered the trial to begin. As the accused was absconding at the time, his bail was cancelled, and an arrest warrant was issued.
During the nationwide anti-casino drive, Samrat and his associate, then Jubo League leader Enamul Haque alias Arman, were arrested from Cumilla on 6 October 2019. Samrat was granted bail on 22 August 2022.
