Retired generals Mamun, Masud abused power, carried out inhumane acts: ICT chief prosecutor
The statement follows an order from the International Crimes Tribunal directing that the two retired generals be produced before it on 7 April in separate cases involving allegations of enforced disappearances and killings linked to the July Uprising.
International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has said Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled and Lt Gen (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury abused their power and carried out inhumane activities similar to those reported in secret detention facilities called "Aynaghar."
"During the 1/11 changeover, they established places resembling safe houses where people were detained and tortured. We have already received numerous allegations of crimes against humanity against them," he said at a press briefing today (29 March).

Addressing a question about whether legal indemnity granted during the 1/11 period could hinder the trial, he said, "We are not bound by any indemnity. The tribunal will conduct its investigation independently. If allegations of crimes against humanity are established against them, the trial will proceed regardless. No indemnity will stand in the way of our work."
He added that those responsible must face appropriate punishment through the tribunal to ensure that no public official dares to commit crimes against humanity in the future.
In the interest of the investigation, the chief prosecutor noted that not all allegations are being disclosed at this stage.
"A formal report based on the tribunal's findings will be submitted after the generals are produced before the court on 7 April," Aminul said.
