Osman Hadi shooting: Prime suspect's wife, brother-in-law, and friend sent on 5-day remand
They told the court that they knew nothing about the planning of the shooting.
A Dhaka court has placed the wife, brother-in-law, and a friend of Faisal Karim Masud, the prime suspect in the gun attack on Inqilab Mancha leader Sharif Osman Hadi, on a five-day remand.
The accused's wife Saheda Parveen Samia, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, and his friend Maria Akter Lima were placed on remand by the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam this evening (15 December), following a hearing.
During the headring, the three told the court that they knew nothing about the planning of the attack.
Saheda Parvin Samia told the court, "I don't know anything about the incident. I last met him [Faisal] 2-3 days before the incident. We spoke on the day of the incident, and after that, he did not talk to us. He didn't stay with us. He would leave late at night and return early in the morning."
Maria Akter Lima said, "He [Faisal] is my friend. We know each other from Facebook. There was no discussion about the attack. He only mentioned that he would give me some money due to financial problems."
Wahid Ahmed Sipu said, "I also don't know anything about this incident."
Earlier, the case's investigating officer DB Police Inspector Faisal Ahmed produced the three individuals before the court and sought a seven-day remand for questioning. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqui confirmed the court's decision, noting that no defence lawyer was present for the accused during the hearing.
Separately, the owner of the motorcycle used by the alleged attackers Md Abdul Hannan was sent on a three-day remand under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code yesterday (14 December).
Samia and Shipu were detained in Narayanganj yesterday, while Maria was apprehended in Dhaka. They were later transferred to Paltan Police Station.
Law enforcement sources stated that the three were detained on suspicion of maintaining contact with the prime suspect, Faisal, before and after the shooting incident. A large number of cheque books allegedly signed by Faisal, along with electronic devices, were reportedly recovered from their possession.
Sharif Osman Hadi, a likely independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head by assailants on a motorcycle while riding a rickshaw on the Box Culvert Road in Paltan, after Jummah prayers on 12 December. Initially admitted to DMCH, he was later shifted to Evercare Hospital.
In a critical condition, Hadi was air-ambulanced to Singapore earlier today for advanced treatment.
