Newborn twins’ death: HC seeks explanation from 3 hospitals

The High Court has given three hospitals in the capital 48 hours to explain why they did not admit the newborn twins, who subsequently died in the hospital premises allegedly due to lack of treatment.

The hospitals are Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital, Dhaka Shishu Hospital, and Islamia Hospital, Mugda.

A high Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam and Justice Ahmed Sohel, on Monday, passed the order and also issued a suo-moto rule.

In the rule, the court requested the Health Secretary, Director General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and authorities of the three hospitals to explain within four weeks why their negligence should not be considered illegal.

Deputy Attorney General, AKM Amin Uddin Manik, who represented the state in the court, told the media, "Saira Khatun, wife of Supreme Court staff, Abul Kalam, gave birth to twins in an auto-rickshaw on her way to hospital this morning."
They were later admitted to Islamia Hospital in Mugda in the capital. However, the hospital referred the newborns to Dhaka Shishu Hospital in the Shyamoli area, which declined to treat them.
Abul Kalam, the father of the newborns later brought the newborns to BSMMU, which also turned them away. Eventually, the newborns died in the ambulance at the hospital premises.

The father then brought the bodies of the infants to the court premises by ambulance to seek justice.
