A Dhaka court today (30 June) convicted and sentenced one Md Shukur Ali Sheikh, 35, to ten-year imprisonment in a case lodged over the attempted rape of a six-year-old child in the capital's Hatirjheel area in 2021.

Judge Sabera Sultana Khanam of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 pronounced the judgment in the presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant.

The court also fined the convict Tk20,000, or, in default, to suffer three months more behind bars.

According to the case documents, Shukur Ali attempted to rape the child inside a rickshaw-garage in the Hatirjheel Aambagan area on 21 May 2021.

The child later told her mother about her ordeal. The child's father filed the case against the sole accused.

The police filed the charge sheet on 13 October 2021. The court delivered the judgment today after examining six witnesses on different hearing dates.
