A Cox's Bazar court has sentenced a Madrasa teacher to life term rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a seven-year-old student in Ramu upazila in 2017.

Judge Jebunnahar Ayesha of Cox's Bazar Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 handed down the verdict on Monday.

The court also fined the convict – Mohammad Islam, son of late Ali Hossain of ​​Chakaria upazila– one lakh taka. And if he is unable to pay the fine, he will have to serve one more year in jail.

According to the court sources, Mohammad Islam, a teacher of Noorani Madrasa in Rashid Nagar area of Ramu upazila, sexually assaulted the seven-year-old child inside the mosque on 28 January, 2017.

Victim's father filed a case against the culprit under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Ramu police station on the same day.

Later, the investigating officer of the case filed a chargesheet in the court on 28 April that year.

After examining 12 witnesses and evidence, the judge found the Madrasa teacher guilty and pronounced the verdict, Special Public Prosecutor of this court Syed Mohammad Rezaur Rahman said.

The court also directed the Deputy Collector of Cox's Bazar to confiscate the movable and immovable property of the convict if the fine is not paid within 30 days after the order.
