ICT accepts charges against ex-SP Anisur, 7 others over 2016 shooting
The tribunal also issued arrest warrants against five accused and ordered three others, currently in custody, to be produced before the court on 16 February.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) today (1 February) accepted formal charges against eight people, including former Jashore superintendent of police Anisur Rahman, in a case over the shooting of two Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders after their arrest in 2016.
A three-member bench of ICT-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, passed the order.
The tribunal also issued arrest warrants against five accused and ordered three others, currently in custody, to be produced before the court on 16 February.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam conducted the hearing on behalf of the prosecution, assisted by Prosecutors Gazi MH Tamim, Mizanul Islam, Tareq Abdullah and others.
According to the prosecution, police detained two Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders, Ruhul Amin and Israfil, in Jashore's Chaugachha on 3 August 2016 in what it described as a false case. Instead of producing them before a court, they were allegedly tortured for two consecutive nights.
The chief prosecutor said the then SP Anisur Rahman later ordered subordinate police officers to shoot the two detainees in their legs.
He alleged that sand was stuffed into the gunshot wounds, which were then tied with towels, before the victims were shown arrested in a fabricated arms case and produced in court. The arms case was later proven false, he said.
The prosecution said the victims developed gangrene due to sand being placed in their wounds, leading to the amputation of their legs.
The tribunal accepted the charges against eight accused in connection with the incident and ordered that the accused be produced before the court on 16 February.
Three accused are currently in custody: former sub-inspector of Chaugachha Police Station Akikul Islam, and constables Sajjadur Rahman and Zahurul Haque. The prosecution said they directly fired the shots on the orders of their superior officers.
Arrest warrants were issued against the remaining accused, including former Chaugachha police station officer-in-charge Mashiur Rahman and sub-inspectors Mokhles, Jamal and Majedul.
