Hearing adjourned on Sikder brothers’ bail rejection order challenge plea

The Appellate Division adjourned hearing for two weeks on Sikder Group Managing Director Ron Haque Sikder and his brother Dipu Haque Sikder's plea over permission to appeal against the High Court bail rejection order.

A bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order today.

Earlier on July 28, Ron Haque Sikder and Dipu Haque Sikder sought permission to challenge their bail rejection order issued by the High Court.

The lawyer of Sikder brothers Sayed Ahmed Raja filed the plea with the Appellate Division.

Earlier on July 19, they filed an anticipatory bail plea with the High Court from Bangkok in the case of alleged torture and attempted murder of two Exim Bank officials. The High Court rejected the bail plea on July 20.

At the same time, the court asked the two brothers to provide 10,000 units of personal protective equipment (PPE) as fine to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund within two weeks for illegally applying for bail while staying abroad.

The two brothers escaped the country on the pretext of medical evacuation with recommendations from ZH Sikder Women's Medical College and Hospital in Bangladesh and Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok.

Two recommendations – one from a local medical centre and another from a foreign one – are required to obtain permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) for the use of an air ambulance.

Upon receiving recommendations from the two hospitals, the civil aviation authorities permitted medical evacuation for them through the use of an air ambulance of R&R Aviation Limited, a sister concern of the Sikder Group.

Government agencies, meanwhile, are now pointing fingers at one another over the escape of the two fugitives.
