The High Court today (8 March) granted bail to former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque in four cases, including the killing of a Jubo Dal activist during the July Uprising and allegations of verdict forgery linked to the Caretaker Government.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Khairul Alam and Justice Md Sagir Hossain passed the order today.
Senior lawyer Mansurul Haque Chowdhury, Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju, Barrister Sara Hossain and Sayed Ahmed Raja, along with lawyer Monayem Nabi Shahin, appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Zahirul Islam Sumon represented the state.
Lawyers said Khairul Haque will not be released immediately as another case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission is still pending against him.
On 24 July last year, Khairul Haque was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the July Movement murder of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad in Jatrabari, Dhaka.
In addition to this case, ABM Khairul Haque faced four other cases.
On 4 August, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against him over allegations of plot forgery and corruption.
Another case, filed on 27 August at Shahbagh Police Station by Supreme Court lawyer Muzahedul Islam Shahin, involves allegations of verdict forgery related to the Caretaker Government.
On 25 August, another case was filed at Fatulla Police Station in Narayanganj by Abdul Bari Bhuiyan, former president of the district bar association and general secretary of Fatulla Police Station BNP.
On the same day, a similar case was filed at Bandar Police Station in Narayanganj by Nurul Islam Molla.
After his bail petitions were rejected by lower courts in these cases, he approached the High Court seeking bail.
Subsequently, the High Court issued a rule regarding bail in five cases.
Hearings have concluded in four of these cases, excluding the ACC case on last Wednesday (4 March).
Khairul Haque served as Bangladesh's 19th Chief Justice from 27 September 2010 to 17 May 2011. He later served three terms as chairman of the Bangladesh Law Commission until his resignation in August 2024, following the collapse of the Awami League regime.
