HC clears way to evict MP Aslam’s illegal establishments

The High Court (HC), by rejecting a writ, cleared the way to evict three companies and one economic zone set up by Dhaka-14 Lawmaker Aslamul Haque grabbing a portion of Buriganga River.

The bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Muhammad Ali handed down the verdict dismissing a writ petition filed by the lawmaker challenging the eviction drive of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

The writ sought cancellation of the eviction drive and compensation from the authorities concerned.

Thanks to the verdict, now there is no hindrance in evicting three companies – CLC Power Company Ltd, Dhaka North Power Company Limited, and Dhaka West Power Limited – of Maisha Group and reclaiming the grabbed portion of Buriganga River.

Aji Ullah and Mamun Mahbub argued for the plaintiff at the court while Manzil Morshed appeared for the National River Conservation Commission (NRCC).

Lawyer Mazil Morshed hoped that the BIWTA would carry out drives there and reclaim land of the river.

On the other hand, the plaintiff's lawyer, Aji Ullah claimed that the BIWTA cannot evict the companies at its will as the High Court did not impose any ban or stay order on the writ petition.

The court suggested that we go to the civil court for having land related issues settled.

"We will follow the suggestion and also file a petition against this verdict at the Appellate Division," he added.
