HC bans waste dumping, STS construction in Bhawal National Park

The High Court has imposed an interim ban on all activities related to waste dumping and the construction of a Secondary Transfer Station (STS) within Bhawal National Park.
An HC bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice Abdur Rahman issued the order today (4 April) following a hearing.
The court also directed the Gazipur City Corporation to refrain from dumping any form of waste within the national park and its adjoining protected forest areas.

The court also issued a rule asking why the authorities' failure to prevent unauthorised construction of an STS and waste dumping in protected forest land and privately owned land adjacent to the park should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional, and against the public interest.
The rule further asks why the Gazipur City Corporation should not be ordered to pay compensation for environmental damage caused to the park and surrounding forests.
The court also questioned why the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Forest Department should not be directed to take steps to protect the park.
These include demarcating its boundaries, restoring natural forests and wildlife habitats, regulating tourism, and introducing technology-based monitoring systems.
The order follows a public interest litigation filed by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association, seeking to safeguard the environment and biodiversity of Bhawal National Park.
