Ex-minister Golam Dastagir Gazi placed on fresh 6-day remand in two cases

A Narayanganj court today (1 September) placed former textiles and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi on a fresh six-day remand in two cases.

Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Hyder Ali's court gave the order after a hearing of a police plea for a ten-day and a five-day remand of the former minister in the cases filed with Araihazar Police Station today.

The court, however, granted the police a three-day remand for Gazi in each of the cases respectively, Court Inspector Abdur Rashid told The Business Standard.

Dastagir Gazi, who was also the Awami League lawmaker for the Narayanganj-1 constituency, was produced in court today after his six-day remand period ended.

Earlier on 25 August, a Narayanganj court granted the police a six-day remand of the former lawmaker in a case filed over the murder of schoolboy Roman Mia in the district.

Pro-BNP lawyers and BNP supporters threw eggs at Gazi outside the court premises that day.

He was arrested from his Shantinagar home on 24 August.

According to the case statement, Roman, 17, son of Anwar Hossain of Chanpara in Narayanganj was shot multiple times while attending a victory procession in the afternoon on 5 August.

When taken to a local private hospital, doctors declared him dead.

On 21 August, victim's aunt Rina Begum filed a case with Rupganj police station charging former bridge minister Obaidul Quader, Golam Dastgir Gazi, his son Gazi Golam Murtaza, some UP chairmen, leaders and workers of Awami League and the party's allied organisations and some 50 to 60 unidentified people.

Golam Dastagir Gazi was elected MP from Rupganj-1 constituency in Narayanganj in the 12th parliamentary elections as an Awami League candidate.
