DU JCD leader Mahi placed on 2-day remand in Tk38 lakh embezzlement case

A Dhaka court has placed expelled Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Mahi Chowdhury Arnab on a two-day remand for questioning in a case over allegedly embezzling Tk38 lakh by luring victims with investment offers on social media.
The order was issued today (9 April) by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan following a hearing.
Mahi was a member of the Dhaka University Mohsin Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case and Sub-Inspector of Kafrul Police Station Md Sajjad Hossain produced the accused before the court and sought a five-day remand.
The application said the crime involved an organised syndicate and that remand was needed to obtain vital information, identify other members, trace the embezzled funds and transactions, and uncover those backing the operation.
Lawyers Atikuzzaman Molla, Abir Hossain Talukdar, and Rajan Chandra Ghosh represented the plaintiff, supporting the remand plea. On the other hand, Khorshed Alam Bhuiyan represented the accused, seeking bail and the cancellation of the remand. After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand for the accused.
According to the case statement, the plaintiff's elder brother, Md Shakirul Islam Himel, met Mahi through an "investor group" on Facebook at various times starting from 1 June 2023. Mahi encouraged Himel to invest, claiming to be a partner in a catering and accessories business. Believing him, Himel provided a total of Tk38.28 lakh through bank transfers and cash at different times.
However, Mahi allegedly went into hiding without returning the investment or any profit. When the victims demanded their money back on 4 April, the accused allegedly threatened to implicate them in false cases.
Later, Md Shakirul Islam Himel's younger brother Md Samsul Haque Tushar filed the case at Kafrul Police Station regarding the incident. The case names three individuals as accused, including Mahi Chowdhury and his father Nazmul Karim Chowdhury.
