Dowry case: Content creator Tanvir Rahi gets bail after surrendering in court
After the hearing, the court granted him bail on a bond of Tk500
A Dhaka court has granted bail to content creator Tanvir Rahi after he surrendered in court in a case filed by his wife over an alleged dowry demand of Tk50 lakh.
Tanvir surrendered today (13 May) through his lawyer in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Manjurul Islam and sought bail through his lawyer on the condition of a mutual settlement.
After the hearing, the court granted him bail on a bond of Tk500, Public Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid confirmed.
The case was filed on 8 March by Tanvir's wife, Fahima Binte Mahbub Puspita, under the Dowry Prohibition Act, alleging that he demanded Tk50 lakh as dowry.
The court had earlier summoned Tanvir to appear on 15 April. As he failed to show up on that date, the court issued an arrest warrant for him.
Advocate Ishtiaq Shahriar argued that the couple got married with a dower (Mohar) fixed at Tk30 lakh. He claimed the case stemmed from a misunderstanding and that both parties now intend to reconcile.
"We requested bail until the next scheduled date on 9 June to facilitate a settlement. If no compromise is reached by then, the court may take further action," the lawyer told the court.
After hearing both sides, the court granted bail to Tanvir.
According to the case statement, Tanvir and Puspita married on 7 August last year.
Puspita alleged that Tanvir had been physically and mentally torturing her demanding dowry since the wedding.
She further alleged that on 22 February, Tanvir assaulted her for Tk50 lakh, leading her to seek help via the 999 emergency hotline.
She subsequently filed a general diary (GD) at Lalbagh Police Station on 27 February.
The case statement further alleges that on 1 March, Tanvir asked Pushpita to meet him in front of Lalbagh Hostel at around 8pm and demanded Tk50 lakh to buy a car.
He also allegedly threatened her with divorce if the money was not paid.
