Dhaka court denies bail to journalist Anis Alamgir
A Dhaka court rejected a bail petition for journalist Anis Alamgir in an anti-terrorism case.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court-1 Judge Md Alamgir passed the order on Thursday (22 January) after hearing the bail petition, said defence lawyer Taslima Zahan Popy.
In the petition, the lawyer stated that the accused is innocent and has no involvement in the incident related to the case. He has been implicated as part of a conspiracy and for the purpose of harassment. Although his name appears in the FIR, there are no specific allegations against him.
It also mentions that he is not a worker or member of any political party. The accused is a distinguished journalist, writer, intellectual, and teacher. None of the sections mentioned in the FIR apply to him. Therefore, he is entitled to bail.
After the hearing, however, the court rejected his bail application.
On 14 December last year, Anis was picked up from a gym in Dhaka's Dhanmondi and taken to the Detective Branch office on Minto Road.
The following day, Arian Ahmed, a central organiser of the July Revolutionary Alliance, filed a case with Uttara West Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act, accusing Anis along with actress Meher Afroz Shaon, Maria Kispotta, and Imtu Ratish.
Anis was then produced before the court and was placed on a five-day remand.
