Cumilla court sends six lawyers to jail in July uprising attack case; eggs thrown at accused

A Cumilla court today (21 April) sent six lawyers to jail in a case filed over attacks on protesters during the July-August uprising.
Cumilla Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Mahabubur Rahman gave this order after a hearing, public prosecutor Qaimul Haque Rinku confirmed to The Business Standard.
A total of 24 lawyers, accused in the case, appeared in the court during the hearing, he said, adding that of them, four were sent to jail and the rest were granted bail. Two lawyers, who were ordered to be jailed, were absent from the hearing.
The lawyers who went to jail are the former president of the Cumilla Bar Association Mostafizur Rahman Liton, former general secretary Jahangir Alam Bhuiyan, Zakir Hossain and Saiful Islam.
Besides, lawyers Md Mohin and Md Sohag were also ordered to be sent to jail in absentia.
Meanwhile, when the lawyers were being taken to the prison van, a group of agitated people threw eggs targeting the accused.
At that time, an egg fell on the head of the former president of the bar, Mostafizur Rahman Liton, said witnesses.
Later, they were taken to the prison van under tight security by the army and rushed to the prison, added witnesses.
A total of four people, including Masud Salauddin and Abdul Momen Ferdous, were present as lawyers for the defendants. In addition, at least 30 lawyers, including District PP Kaimul Haque Rinku and Badiul Alam Sujan, were present on the plaintiff's side.
During the mass uprising, on 3 August, students took position near the Police Lines area of Cumilla. Many students and the public were injured in the protest.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, a case was filed against 261 people, including former MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar, for the attack on students and the public, including shooting and the explosion of cocktails, in the area.
Besides, 150 to 200 unnamed people were also accused in the case.
Most of the named accused are followers of AKM Bahauddin Bahar, according to the case statement.
However, apart from Awami League leaders and activists, the list of accused in the case includes people from various professions, starting from lawyers.
On 11 February, at around 2:30pm, Md Inzamul Haque Rana, the coordinator of the Comilla Metropolitan unit of Students Against Discrimination, filed the case at the Kotwali Model Police Station.
