Crude bomb blasts in Jatrabari: 4, including AL leader, sent to jail

A Dhaka court today (20 September) sent four people, including an Awami League leader, to jail in a case filed over crude bomb blasts in front of Jatrabari Police Station in the capital.

The court also fixed Tuesday (22 September) for hearing a five-day remand plea against the accused.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order after a hearing, said SI Mohin Uddin of the prosecution department.

The accused are Md Raihan Uddin, 35, office secretary of Unit 6 under Ward 32 of the Awami League's Dhaka South unit's Bangshal thana committee; Russel Khan, 32; Ala Uddin, 28; and Abdullah Mashhur Ashrafi, 20.

DB Wari Zone Inspector Mohammad Golam Mostafa, the investigating officer in the case, sought five days' remand for the four accused.

However, as the investigating officer was not present during the hearing, the court sent the accused to jail and fixed 22 September for hearing the remand plea.

Earlier, several crude bombs exploded in front of Jatrabari Police Station on Friday night (18 September).

After identifying a suspect from CCTV footage, police arrested Raihan Uddin in an operation in the Bangshal area yesterday (19 September).

Based on information provided by Raihan, police later recovered four unexploded crude bombs around 12:15am. The devices were wrapped in red tape and concealed in a sack of brick chips beside a pillar in the parking area of a 10-storey building on Zain Saha Road in Lalbagh.

The DMP's bomb disposal unit later neutralised the devices.

Acting on further information obtained from Raihan during interrogation, police conducted an operation in the Dogair area of Demra and arrested Russel, Ala Uddin and Abdullah.

Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Jewel Rana filed the case under the Explosives Act over the blasts.
