Court freezes 57 bank accounts of ex-minister Nuruzzaman, wife

A Dhaka court today (30 June) ordered authorities to freeze 57 bank accounts of former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed and his wife Hosne Ara Begum over graft allegations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order, following a petition of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Of the accounts, 32 were in the name of Nuruzzaman, while the rest 25 in Hosne Ara's name.
The court also ordered the seizure of a 10-katha plot in Nuruzzaman's New Town property in the eastern region and 7% of a landholding in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat district, with a combined estimated value of Tk33.19 lakh. Additionally, 116% of land registered under his wife, Hosne Ara Begum, has also been ordered seized.
According to the petition, former minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed is accused of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income by abusing power and engaging in criminal misconduct during his tenure.
A case has been filed against him under Section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004; Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012; and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
He is accused of illegally acquiring, transferring, and converting money with the intent to conceal its origin, said the ACC petition.
The petition stated that the attachment and freezing of both movable and immovable assets in Nuruzzaman's name is essential.
