Court fixes 3 Feb for hearing arguments in Mohammadpur cat killing case
A Dhaka court has set 3 February for hearing arguments in a case filed over the killing of a cat in the capital's Mohammadpur area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad fixed the date today (25 January) after a hearing in the case against Mohammadpur resident Akbar Hossain Shiblu, said plaintiff's lawyer Zakir Hossain.
Earlier, on 2 December, the court formally concluded the recording of witness testimonies in the case. A total of four witnesses testified during the trial.
According to court sources, Nafisa Nawrin Chowdhury, on behalf of People for Animal Welfare, filed the case with the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on 5 February last year. On the same day, the court recorded the plaintiff's statement and directed Mohammadpur police to investigate the allegations and submit a report.
Following the investigation, police submitted a report confirming the allegations as true. On 14 July, the court framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin.
As per the case statement, on 1 February last year, a cat owned by a resident named Mansur, who lives on the ninth floor of Muktijoddha Tower in Mohammadpur, went missing. Later, CCTV footage from the building showed the accused repeatedly kicking the cat. Even after the animal collapsed motionless, he stepped on it to ensure its death.
A witness who saw the incident immediately informed the plaintiff. Witness statements and CCTV footage confirmed that the accused intentionally killed the cat.
The plaintiff also sought the issuance of an arrest warrant against the accused in the case petition.
