Bodies of many July Uprising victims dumped in river, ICT chief prosecutor claims
The prosecution says 114 bodies have been buried at the Rayerbazar mass grave, while investigators have so far identified 834 people killed during the 2024 July Uprising.
Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Md Aminul Islam today (15 July) claimed investigators had found evidence that the bodies of many people killed during the July Uprising were dumped in a river from a hospital in Dhaka, adding that those responsible would be brought to justice.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the mass grave of July Uprising victims beside the Martyred Intellectuals Cemetery in Rayerbazar, he said investigators were working to identify the hospital's former authorities and others involved.
"Our investigation has found that many bodies were taken from a hospital in Dhaka and dumped into a nearby river," he said. "Those responsible, including the hospital authorities at the time, will be identified and prosecuted after the investigation is completed."
He added that investigators were also trying to identify the victims whose bodies were allegedly dumped in the river.
According to the prosecution, 114 bodies have been buried in the Rayerbazar mass grave. So far, eight July martyrs have been identified, while efforts are underway to establish the identities of the remaining victims.
Citing United Nations figures, Aminul Islam said around 1,400 people were killed during the July mass uprising. He said the prosecution was inspecting mass graves as part of its investigation and had so far identified the bodies of 834 July martyrs.
The chief prosecutor said investigators would also visit mass graves in Jurain, Matuail, Narayanganj and Munshiganj. He said the identities of the victims would be established through DNA testing and other scientific methods.
