A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for former law minister Anisul Huq in connection with the murder of a vegetable vendor, Md Shahabul Islam Shaon, in Ashulia during the mass uprising in August last year.
Also, former state minister for disaster management and relief Dr Enamur Rahman has been shown arrested in another case filed over the murder of a salaryman, Shakil Anowar, in the same area during that time.
The orders were issued by Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Tajul Islam Sohag after police produced the two accused before the court, and separate hearings were held this morning (4 September).
The investigating officer (IO) of the Shaon murder case, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Md Khaja Golam Kibria, had requested a seven-day remand for the former law minister, while the Shakil murder case's IO, Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Nazrul Islam, had requested to show Enamur arrested.
Anisul's lawyers requested bail, but the prosecution opposed it. After the hearing, the court scrapped the bail plea and remanded the former law minister.
According to the Shaon murder case file, the victim was a vegetable vendor who joined the uprising on August 4 last year. He died after being shot by miscreants near the Ashulia-Baipail intersection. The victim's elder brother, Md Tawhidul Mia, filed a case against 18 named and 300-400 unnamed individuals.
In the Shakil murder case, the victim had also joined the protest on 5 August near the Baipail overpass. He died after being shot in the face and forehead. His wife filed a case against 86 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Enamur.
Anisul was arrested from the Sadarghat area on August 13 last year while attempting to flee by waterway and has been in jail since. Enamur was arrested from Dhaka's Bhatara area on January 26 this year and has also been behind bars since.
