‘500 bhori’ gold theft: Main accused confesses before court; all 4 suspects sent to jail
Three other accused – Nurul Islam, 33, Uttam Chandra Sur, 49, and Anita Roy, 31 – were also sent to jail after being produced before the court.
The main accused in the case filed over the alleged theft of 500 bhori gold from Shampa Jewellers at Fortune Shopping Mall in the capital's Malibagh has confessed to his involvement before the court today (17 October).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub recorded the statement of main accused Shahin Matbor, 46, and ordered to send him to jail.
Three other accused – Nurul Islam, 33, Uttam Chandra Sur, 49, and Anita Roy, 31 – were also sent to jail after being produced before the court.
Sub-Inspector Zinnat Ali of the Prosecution Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the matter.
Earlier, on 16 October, police arrested Shahin from Chattogram. Police also recovered 121.07 bhori of gold from a cowshed at his house in Faridpur. Based on Shahin's information, the other accused were arrested from different locations.
Today, police recovered 52.81 bhori of gold from the Barishal residence of absconding accused Shaishob Roy and his wife Anita.
Meanwhile, 2 bhori of gold, a motorcycle, and Tk1.77 lakh were recovered from the Narayanganj residence of Nurul Islam.
According to the case statement, on the night of 8 October, around 9pm, the shop owner and his employees closed the store and went home. The next morning, around 6:30am, the market guard informed them about the incident. Upon arrival, the owner discovered that all the gold ornaments were missing.
The complainant, shop owner Achintya Kumar Biswas, claimed that the store had 500 bhori of gold ornaments, where 400 bhori belonged to the shop and 100 bhori were held as pawned items. Following the incident, he filed a case with Ramna Model Police Station on 9 October against unidentified persons.
