A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed three leaders of Muktijoddha Mancha on three-day remand each in a case filed over the attack on Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur and his followers.

The remanded people are – Muktijoddha Mancha Secretary Al Mamun, its Dhaka University unit Secretary Yasir Arafat Turjo and a member of the organisation Shanto.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Moinul Islam granted the remand when police produced them before the court.

On December 22, a section of Muktijoddha Mancha activists carried out an attack on Nur and his followers inside his Ducsu office on the Dhaka University campus. A case was filed with the capital's Shahbagh police station over the attack.

Sub Inspector Abdur Roich filed the case on Monday night against 30-35 people mentioning eight names.

The accused include Aminul Islam Bulbul, Al Mamun, ASM Sonnet, Yeasin Arafat Turjo, Imran Sarker, Eyad Al Riyad, Mahbub Hassan Niloy and Touhidul Islam Mahim.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday said the government will investigate why Nur is being attacked repeatedly.

The minister made the remark while replying to a reporter's question after attending a programme of Soviet Alumni Association at Wasa Bhaban in Karwan Bazar.

"You all know that a case was filed over this incident. Some people have already been arrested," he said.

He further said that those who have been accused or were seen on the spot will be apprehended for sure.

Tofail Ahmed, member of Awami League's advisory committee and a former minister, termed the attack on Nur unfair and unacceptable.

Addressing a programme in Bhola on Tuesday, Tofail said, "Assaulting a Ducsu VP is a disgrace for all students."

Tofail, former vice-president of Ducsu, also said, "When we were involved in student politics, we followed different ideologies. Despite that, all of us sat together and declared the 11-point Programme on January 4, 1969.

"When someone is elected as Ducsu vice-president, he becomes everyone's leader. The way Nur was tortured inside the Ducsu office was inhumane. The NSF (National Students Federation Pakistan) attacked the Ducsu office in a similar manner when we were students. Ayub Khan and the NSF fell from power, but nobody learned a lesson from it."

On Monday, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed the authorities concerned to take action against those who carried out the assault.
