3 more Mitford murder accused remanded

A Dhaka court has granted 7-day remands for the three more accused over the gruesome killing of scrap trader Sohag, who was beaten and bludgeoned to death in the courtyard of Mitford Hospital in Puran Dhaka.

The case's investigating officer, Inspector Md Moniruzzaman of Kotwali Police Station, produced the three accused in court and requested 10-day remands for each.

The court granted 7-day remands for each of the three suspects – Md Nannu Kazi, Md Rizwan Uddin alias Abhijit Basu, and Tarek Rahman Robin.

Earlier at 3:10pm yesterday, the accused were brought into the courtroom under tight security, wearing bulletproof vests, helmets, and handcuffed from behind.

Inspector Moniruzzaman told the court that the three men were directly involved in the crime, as evident in the CCTV footage.

'Didn't your conscience protest?'

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman sternly rebuked three suspects during the remand hearing.

"Didn't it prick your conscience, even once, to strike a man with such a massive concrete chunk? Didn't your chest tremble even a little?" he said.

Turning to the accused in the dock, Judge Saifuzzaman said, "How could you kill someone so brutally?"

The accused stood silently with their heads down.

Prosecutor Kaiyum Islam Noyon supported the remand request, arguing, "These men acted like beasts. Their cruelty has gone viral and shocked the nation. Public outrage is growing. We demand the maximum remand period."

After the hearing, the court granted 7-day remands for each of the three accused. None had defence lawyers present.

On 9 July, Sohag, a scrap trader, was brutally murdered in broad daylight near Gate 3 of Mitford Hospital. His attackers repeatedly smashed his head and body with a large concrete boulder. Video footage of the killing went viral, sparking nationwide outrage.

The following day, Sohag's elder sister Manjuara Begum filed a murder case at the local police station. Police also filed a separate arms case in connection with the incident. A total of nine suspects have now been arrested.

Sohag, son of Yusuf Ali Howlader of Purbo Namabari village in Keraniganj Model Thana, had been running a scrap business for years on Rajani Ghosh Lane, near Mitford Hospital.
