2 get life imprisonment in heroin recovery case

A Dhaka court has sentenced two men to life imprisonment in a case filed over the recovery of heroin from the Dayaganj area under Jatrabari Police Station.
Dhaka's Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Moin Uddin Chowdhury gave the verdict today (13 April). The convicts were also fined Tk20,000 each. In default of payment, they will have to serve three months of rigorous imprisonment.
In the same case, a woman named Sanjida was acquitted as the charges against her could not be proven, confirmed Bench Assistant Golam Nabi.
The accused were present in court during the verdict. After the ruling, they were sent to jail with conviction warrants.
According to the case statement, on 23 January 2019 at around 10pm, police received a tip-off that heroin was being sold in the Dayaganj area of Jatrabari. They conducted a raid in that area and arrested Imran and Robin, while two others named Bebi and Sanjida fled.
Police recovered 118 grams of heroin from Imran and Robin. Sub-Inspector Billal Hossain Jony of Jatrabari Police Station filed the case the same day.
After investigation, Sub-Inspector Mukit Hasan submitted the charge sheet on 23 April of the same year, accusing Imran, Robin and Sanjida. However, Bebi was recommended for discharge due to lack of evidence.
On 27 June 2019, the court framed charges against the three accused and ordered the trial to begin. During the trial, testimonies of five witnesses were recorded.
