Couple, two children found dead at Mirpur-11 home
Police today (5 February) recovered the bodies of four members of a family, including two young children, from a residence in the Wapda Bihari Camp area of Mirpur-11 in the capital.
The deceased were identified as Masum, 30; his wife Fatema Akhter Sumi, 25; and their two children – four-year-old Minhaj and two-year-old Asad.
Confirming the incident, Pallabi Police Station Inspector (Operations) Md Hanif Mia said police rushed to the scene after receiving information and recovered the bodies. Senior police officials also visited the spot.
According to police, Masum worked as a rickshaw puller. He had grown up in the Mirpur Bihari Camp, where the family had been living since after the Liberation War of 1971. His wife, Sumi, was from Jhenaidah, Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Alamgir Jahan told The Business Standard.
The OC said Masum's body was found on the ground floor of a house in the camp, while the bodies of the other three family members were recovered from a bed. He added that the cause of death could not be determined immediately.
Based on preliminary information from neighbours, police said the family was under financial stress. Investigators are initially suspecting that the couple may have taken their own lives after killing their children due to debt-related distress.
The exact cause of death will be confirmed after post-mortem examinations. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the deaths resulted from homicide or suicide.
After the inquest, the bodies were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsies.
