District primary education officer held with Tk1.2 lakh bribe in Jashore
The accused, Md Ashraful Alam, allegedly demanded and accepted the bribe over pension and salary equalisation documents
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has detained a district primary education officer in Jashore, allegedly with Tk1.2 lakh in bribe money, after conducting a sting operation.
The accused, Md Ashraful Alam, allegedly demanded and accepted the bribe over pension and salary equalisation documents, ACC Assistant Director (Public Relations) Md Tanzir Ahmed told journalists today (7 January).
ACC officials said they found the allegations credible during preliminary verification after receiving a written complaint from a person named Md Nurunnabi. Following approval from the commission, officials decided to conduct a trap operation.
Describing the operation, the ACC assistant director said that as per their plan, the complainant handed over Tk1.2 lakh at around 1:30pm today in the presence of independent witnesses. The money was inventoried and kept under the complainant's custody.
Later that day, at around 4:30pm, the complainant went to the Jashore District Primary Education Office and, in response to the accused's demand, gave him the money. Ashraful accepted the cash and stored it in the right-hand drawer of his office desk.
Upon receiving the signal, ACC officials raided the office, recovered the bribe money from the drawer in the presence of independent witnesses, and seized it following legal procedure, officials said.
ACC stated that by accepting the bribe, the accused committed a punishable offence under Section 161 of the Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
The commission's integrated district office in Jashore has filed a case in connection with the incident.
