The National Consensus Commission aims to reach a reasonable position by 30 July, recognising the responsibility owed to the martyrs of the July Uprising, the commission's Vice-chairman Ali Riaz has said.
Emphasising the importance of reaching a consensus on fundamental issues without delay, he said, "If we can swiftly reach agreement on the core matters, it will be possible to bring this dialogue with political parties to a meaningful conclusion and produce a National Charter."
Riaz made the remarks at the beginning of the 12th day of the second phase of discussions between the commission and political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka this morning (13 July).
Commission members Justice Md Emdadul Haque, Iftekharuzzaman, Badiul Alam Majumdar, Safar Raj Hossain, Md Ayub Miah, and Monir Hayder, special assistant to the chief adviser, were present at the discussion.
Riaz expressed his sincere appreciation to the political party leaders for their active and enthusiastic participation despite their organisational commitments.
Today's dialogue included representatives from 30 political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party (NCP), Gono Odhikar Parishad, Ganosamhati Andolon, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Revolutionary Workers Party, and Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party.
According to a press release issued by the consensus commission, today's discussions will cover three major issues: the appointment of the chief justice, the caretaker government system, and the declaration of a state of emergency.
