Commuters suffer as transport workers go on sudden strike

Transport workers went on bus strike on 18 routes from Jashore from Sunday (Nov 17) noon demanding amendment of some provisions of the newly enforced Road Transport Act.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Paribahan Sangstha Sramik Samity's southern region Murtaza Hossain said "Transport workers raised their resentments about some provisions of the act from the very beginning. But the government did not pay heed to their concerns, forcing them to go on strike from Sunday noon."

The sudden bus strike has caused huge suffering to the commuters.

Zamilur Rahman, a resident of Bezpara in the district, said that on Saturday he bought a ticket for going to Dhaka. But he came to know about the transport strike afterwards when he reached the bus stand to travel to Dhaka.

Raza Ahmed, a motor parts trader, echoed the same. He also said he has an urgency to go to Dhaka but hardly get any bus.

Commuters who are facing immense sufferings for the sudden strike sought administration's immediate intervention to make the situation normal.

Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shafiul Arif said they have taken initiative to hold a meeting with transport owners and workers to ease the situation.

The strike will be withdrawn shortly, hoped Shafiul.
