CMP transfers DC Amirul, officer at centre of multiple controversies
The transfer order did not specify any reason for the reassignment.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam has been removed from his post in the South Division and reassigned as DC (welfare and force) at the police lines, following various controversies.
The transfer, made through an office order signed by CMP Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Shawkat Ali and issued yesterday (18 June), also reassigned the responsibilities of two other deputy commissioners.
The transfer order did not specify any reason for the reassignment.
According to the order, Mohammad Habibur Rahman, DC of the Detective Branch (DB) South Division and a recently promoted additional DIG, has been appointed DC of the CMP South Division.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Hasan Mostafa Swapan, DC (welfare and force) at the police lines, has been assigned as DC of the CMP North Division.
Amirul Islam had previously faced criticism over several incidents.
On 12 October last year, he was accused of assaulting and physically harassing a journalist while the latter was performing professional duties in Chattogram.
Following the incident, journalists working in the city demanded his removal.
In May this year, while serving as DC of the CMP's North Zone, he was also accused of misconduct towards a female student during a graffiti painting event at the Shaheed Wasim Akram Flyover.
The allegation sparked protests and press conferences by students and July Uprising activists, who demanded his withdrawal and punishment.
However, the CMP has not issued any official reason regarding the transfer.
The Business Standard could not reach CMP Additional Police Commissioner (Administration and Finance) Wahidul Haque Chowdhury and Assistant Commissioner (Public Relations) Aminur Rashid for comment.
However, the allegations brought against Amirul in recent months had generated widespread discussion and criticism in various quarters.
