Chinese medical team in city to treat injured during uprising

A Chinese National Emergency Medical Team arrived in Dhaka today (22 September) to provide advanced medical care to those who suffered severe injuries during the student-led mass upsurge.
The team, comprising 10 medical experts from West China Hospital, one of China's premier healthcare institutions, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from Kunming at noon.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Sheikh Sayedul Haque welcomed them at the airport.
After receiving the delegation, Yao Wen said at the invitation of the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chinese government has decided to send the National Emergency Medical Team to Bangladesh.
"As a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partner, China stands in solidarity with Bangladesh. This medical mission underscores the deep bond between our peoples," he said.
The Chinese envoy said this is the first emergency medical team sent to Bangladesh since the formation of the interim government marking a significant milestone in the bilateral partnership.
China has pledged to assess the injuries and provide emergency humanitarian aid which may include sending additional medical teams and essential medical supplies based on Bangladesh's needs, he added.
The envoy expressed sympathy for the civilians affected by the recent unrest in Bangladesh.
Head of the Chinese National Emergency Medical Team Dong Qian said his team is specialised in areas such as general surgery, trauma care, orthopedics, rehabilitation, critical care and ophthalmology.
He said their visit is being jointly coordinated by the Chinese foreign and commerce ministries and the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) with support from the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.
On behalf of the government, DGHS Additional DG Sayedul Haque expressed deep gratitude to the Chinese government for sending the emergency medical team here.
