A six-month-old child was killed and nine people were critically injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar today (7 October).

The accident occurred around 11:45am when the Hanif Paribahan bus collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw in the Fasiakhali Jhorjhori Bridge area, Chiringa Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahin Mia told The Business Standard.

"Six-month-old Maria, daughter of Nurul Amin of Chakaria's Baraitali Union, who was in the auto-rickshaw with her parents was killed on the spot. The names of the injured could not be known immediately.

"Five of the injured included the driver and passengers of the auto-rickshaw and the other four were passengers of the bus. All of them were rescued and taken to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex," the OC added.

Dr Shovon Dutta of the health complex said all nine were given first aid and then referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as their condition was critical.

OC Shahin further said, "The driver and helper of the bus managed to flee the scene immediately after the accident. The vehicle was impounded and legal actions were underway."
