Case filed against 4 brokers over death of 12 Sunamganj migrants in Mediterranean
According to the complaint, the victims died due to a severe lack of food and clean drinking water.
A case has been filed against four human traffickers following the deaths of 12 youth from Sunamganj while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to Greece.
The case was filed last night (30 March) by Salikur Rahman, the father of deceased Suhanur Rahman Ehia from Basuri village in Derai's Jagdal Union.
The primary suspects named in the case are Mujibur Mia, son of late Akib Ullah from Tarapasha village; Saleh Ahmed, son of Maulana Wahid Mia from Jagdal village; Shayek Ahmed, from Tiargaon village in Jagannathpur; Jasim Mia, from Chhatak upazila. Several unidentified individuals have also been listed as accused.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Enamul Haque Chowdhury of Derai Police Station confirmed the matter, stating that legal action will be taken following an investigation.
According to the complaint, the victims died due to a severe lack of food and clean drinking water while crossing the sea from Libya to Greece last Saturday (28 March). It is alleged that their bodies were dumped into the sea.
The deceased include five individuals from Jagannathpur upazila, six from Derai, and one from Doarabazar upazila, police confirmed.
Family members revealed that the victims left for Libya 3-4 months ago. They were being trafficked toward Greece by boat after paying brokers between Tk12-13 lakhs.
Plaintiff Salikur Rahman said, "My son was persuaded by Italy-based Saleh Ahmed to go to Europe. We agreed on Tk12 lakh. I last spoke to him on 22 March. He was crying, saying there was no food or water."
He added that since then, the broker has not picked up his calls.
The accused are currently unreachable, with their mobile phones switched off and their whereabouts unknown.
