A four-member specialist medical team from the United Kingdom arrived in Dhaka today (3 December) to assist in the treatment of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who is currently admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital in a critical condition.
The delegation, led by Dr Richard Buell, went to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) on the fourth floor of Evercare Hospital and reviewed Khaleda Zia's current health condition. They held an initial discussion with the hospital's local medical team.
Hospital sources said the UK-based experts are in Bangladesh to help formulate an advanced treatment plan for Khaleda Zia and provide necessary recommendations. They will observe the overall situation in coordination with the local physicians.
BNP leaders said they hope the arrival of foreign specialists will mark significant progress in Khaleda Zia's ongoing medical care.
Another Chinese medical team is also scheduled to arrive today.
Earlier yesterday, a five to six-member high-level medical team from China arrived in Dhaka to help with the treatment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
A medical board, consisting of local and foreign specialist doctors, formed for the treatment of Khaleda, held a meeting yesterday (1 December) to discuss the next course of action for her treatment.
Khaleda Zia's personal physician and BNP standing committee member Dr Zahid earlier said Khaleda is accepting the treatment doctors are providing in the coronary care unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital despite being in a critical condition.
"As we [doctors] say, she is maintaining the treatment she is receiving," he said while briefing reporters about Khaleda's health in front of the hospital in the capital at noon.
Saying much unverified information is making the rounds now, he urged everyone to be patient and not to pay heed to any kind of rumours regarding her physical condition. He added that the party has also made it clear how official information will be communicated.
Khaleda, who has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since 23 November and was moved into CCU on 27 November, will be taken abroad if the necessity arises, he said.
On taking Khaleda Zia abroad for advanced treatment, Zahid said the members of her medical board are currently examining her.
Meanwhile, regarding her son Tarique Rahman's return to the country, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said it depends on Khaleda Zia's health condition, while Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain has stated that no specific information is currently available.]
Meanwhile, responsible party sources have indicated that the acting chairman's return is likely between 12 and 15 December.
Tarique's return to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile in London has been a topic of speculations and debates in the country's political landscape since the ouster of Awami League government in August 2024.
