Brahmanbaria Municipality Mayor Nayar Kabir said all activities of the municipality remained suspended as the municipality had suffered severe damage in the Hefazat mayhem.

"It is uncertain when the activities will be resumed," said the mayor.

Everything was set on fire by pouring gunpowder and petrol, she added.

Brahmanbaria municipality has suffered heavy losses in the violence and destruction caused by Hefazat-e-Islam activists and supporters in protest of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh.

The activists and supporters conducted vandalism and arson attacks on several government and non-government establishments, including the municipal office and the municipal auditorium, from 26 to 28 March.

Brahmanbaria municipal authorities issued a notice on Friday with details of the damages they suffered.

According to the notice, 20 steel cupboards, 25 wooden cupboards, 18 computers, five laptops, four photocopier machines, 34 tables, seven secretariat tables, 115 chairs and five ACs, all belonging to the municipality, were damaged in the vandalism and arson. 

The health department of the municipality suffered the destruction and looting of 12 freezers, four refrigerators, vaccines, ceiling fans, 10,000 LED lamps, 3,000 light sheds, 50 coils of electric wires, 16 vehicles, three road rollers, one mosquito repellent vehicle and many other items.

The notice further said that the goods of the municipality's storage branch, stationery goods, documents, including pay-order approval of house plan, check registers, issue registers, cash books, asset registers, personal documents and service books of all officers and employees, all registers and bills of contractors were burnt in the fire.

Hefazat men also set fire to the Ustad Alauddin Khan Auditorium owned by the municipality. Five hundred chairs, 20 sets of sofas, 20 5-ton ACs, 10 2-ton ACs and 150 ceiling fans were burnt to ashes there.
