BOU pays tribute to former vice-chancellors

Bangladesh Open University (BOU) today commemorated two of its eminent former vice-chancellors — Professor Dr M Shamsher Ali, founding VC, internationally renowned nuclear scientist and Islamic thinker, and Professor Dr R I M Aminur Rashid, a distinguished scientist and administrator.
The remembrance programme was held at the university's conference and training centre at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, where teachers, officials, and staff honoured their legacy with heartfelt tributes.
Speaking at the event, BOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam said, "Professor Shamsher Ali was not only a world-class scientist but also a profound Islamic thinker and educationist. He integrated scientific knowledge with spiritual wisdom and was a guiding light for his students and colleagues alike. As a founding VC, he established distance education in Bangladesh, opening new doors of knowledge for countless people. His intellectual legacy will remain an eternal source of inspiration."
On Professor Aminur Rashid, the VC recalled: "He was my direct teacher and later a colleague when he chaired the Physics Department at Dhaka University. He gave BOU a new direction with his dedication as a researcher, administrator and teacher-leader. His contributions to education and science will always be remembered."
Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Saeed Ferdous, PhD, who chaired the programme, said, "These two great personalities not only advanced the university's progress but also set standards for educational values and ethics. We are committed to following their path."
The Registrar (in additional charge), Professor Md Anisur Rahman, conducted the programme. Participants shared their memories, describing the late vice-chancellors as "beacons of knowledge whose presence illuminated daily academic life."
The event also proposed naming university buildings and facilities after the two former VCs to preserve their memory. The day was not only one of remembrance but also a pledge to carry forward their vision, keeping their light alive for future generations.
